DV02 — Persian Garden Poetry Night
Version 2.0.0

An imagined Persianate garden at dusk, a water channel running its length, lamps along the edge, and a circle gathered to say verses in turn: a ritual of voices where wit, longing and formality share the same low light.

SEMANTIC SEED

Create work that is hushed, ceremonial, alluring, and distinctly itself. Use this semantic seed as an aesthetic starting point. Interpret it through your medium, letting its character guide the discoveries you make as the work develops. Keep the place adult and dramatic, and honour its gravity: reverence is its register, charge is its constant, and nothing in it is a costume.

Imagine a walled garden in a Persianate city at dusk, a narrow channel of water running its length between rows of trees. Let lamps be set along the water's edge, the stone cooling underfoot, the last warm light leaving the walls. A circle of adults sits near the water to say poems in turn, each voice rising, falling and being answered by murmurs, and the garden acts as an instrument for the voices. Give the work the ritual of an evening that is formal in structure and intimate in feeling: tea, fruit, cushions, hands marking time, the audience's silence a kind of assent. Show the beauty of water in motion, the leaves moving, the lamps doubled in the channel. Let adult charge sit in the voice, in the held gaze after a line, and in the knowledge that the verse is speaking for the speaker. Keep it imagined, exact and tender.

ARRIVAL AND CHARGE

A woman in a gown of deep wine silk, arriving after the first poem has begun, is not hurried to a seat but allowed to walk the length of the water with her reflection travelling beside her. Where poetry is common currency, a woman of great presence is welcomed into the circle as a voice.
